Craniosacral Therapy (CST) and Reiki
Craniosacral Therapy (CST) is a modality in which the practitioner feels for restrictions in the cranium, along the spine, to the sacrum, using the softest touch in order to release adhesions in the soft tissues that surround the central and peripheral nervous system.
In CST, the practitioner also feels for micromovements in the patient's body and adjusts accordingly with slow movement that can sometimes feel like an "unwinding". Alternatively the entire session could be gentle touch with only stillness. The goal is to support each patient's own innate wisdom.
With profound comforting touch and cradling, CST can be especially helpful for anxiety and depression, as well as neck pain, headaches, and TMJ disorders. I have level 1 training in CST including intraoral training for TMJ dysfunction.
A modality very similar in feeling to CST is Reiki. I am Level 2 Reiki initiated. Reiki is the most ancient form of healing and it combines two Japanese words, "rei" (God's wisdom, higher power) and "ki" (life force energy). Reiki healing is the idea that energy is channelled from a universal energy source and then transferred to another through intention.
It can feel very similar to CST in the receiving feel of a gentle touch, although the touch can be a bit heavier in Reiki and there will never be any physical movement of the receiver.
While the intention, or the paths of CST and Reiki may take different routes, the destination is the same, and I often overlap them in my practice. The goal is to activate the natural healing processes of the patient's body, thereby restoring both the physical and the emotional well-being. While receiving the quiet and complete presence of the practitioner, the receiver is often able to come into meditative brain wave states. This opens the mind for higher cognitive function, problem solving, creativity, as well as opening and releasing repressed memories, trauma and strengthening the immune system.
To further aid in this healing and deep relaxation/meditative state, I have a Healthy Wave 5-Therapy Mat covering the entire massage table. It's filled with 16 pounds of crushed amethyst crystal, as well as 88 1-inch stones of jade and tourmaline. In addition to their vibrational healing properties, when they're heated up, they create far-infrared heat and negative ions. Another therapy, PEMP (Pulsed Electro Magnetic Field), sends a frequency of 8Hz, close to the Schumann resonance (the Earth's "pulse") which improves brain function by increasing alpha waves and stimulating cells to regenerate and repair.
